5I should have gotten this a long time ago!Dec 26, 2007
By Josephine
I have at least 4 pairs of shoes that were great when I tried them on in the store, but I haven't been able to wear them with comfort for any more than 2 hours at a time. I bought this shoe stretcher and it has worked wonders! It has the most flexibility of any product on the market, stretching side to side, forward and back, and at pressure points. I'm a teacher and I highly recommend it to anyone who is on their feet a lot, or looking to break in good leather shoes!

3Not durable in my case, but well above cheaper productsJan 12, 2011
By D. Alexander
I bought this stretcher on the assumption that I would never have to buy another. That seems not to be the case. Superficially, it feels like a professional-quality piece. Large, heavy, smooth wood, big metal parts. Only the small plastic bunion attachments seem cheap and sparse in number.

I used this unit to stretch two pairs of men's dress shoes, both size 12. The first pair was cheap, around $50, with rubber soles, and fit modestly well. The second pair was $125, very stiff, leather soled, and much higher quality, though perhaps a half-size too small. I drenched the inside and outside of both sets of shoes with rubbing alcohol before employing this shoe stretcher on each shoe for two days. Each time, I tightened the stretcher until it would no longer turn. The force to achieve this did not feel unreasonable and required no awkward positions or histrionics.

The result: the cheap shoes stretched a half-size in width. Where my pinkie toes would go numb before, they no longer do if I wear thin dress socks. The expensive shoes stretched very little, if at all. They were tight. They are tight. Realistically, further stretching would require much more force for much longer.

I could deal with that if the stretcher was reusable, but the threading of the main screw has begun to curl. The screw no longer threads smoothly. Tightening it for another use would probably ruin it. For what it cost to have this single wooden foot shipped, that's just not reasonable. I've sent a message to the vendor for a refund or replacement. I'll update this with their response.

UPDATE:

I've added back one star for customer service. I didn't receive a response to my email, but when I called, the wait was minimal and I was connected to a very pleasant lady who refunded the cost of the item. She suggested that the company sold thousands of this model and that complaints were exceedingly rare. She also recommended the following procedure to stretch a shoe:

1) Heat the shoe by placing it in the sun or with a blowdryer
2) Coat the inside and outside with stretching formula or rubbing alcohol
3) Apply the shoe stretcher or, for more modest results, wear the shoe while keeping your foot near a heater

In sum then, based on the strength of customer support that stands behind the product, it may be worth considering.

4Good QualityJul 31, 2008

It did stretch my shoes slightly. It your foot pain is across the top of your foot, you probably want the other type of stretcher, I think it's called a 'vamp stretcher', otherwise this one will probably help.

2Buyer beware when it comes to SIZINGDec 22, 2011
By JK
I had high hopes for this product. I have a few pairs of shoes that fit generally well but have some pressure points. After reading the reviews, I decided to take the plunge. I wear a men's 7, so I bought a small. Seeing as how the small is supposed to fit 5-8.5, the stretcher should fit perfectly, right?

WRONG. The stretcher is WAY too big. If you have reasonably nice shoes (I tried the stretcher on a pair of Allen Edmonds), the waist of the shoe is narrower than the toe box to follow the natural contours of the foot. The stretcher would not even go halfway into my shoe; it would get stuck at the waist. The issue is that the front portion is simply too long. As a consequence, the stretcher, towards the middle, is simply too wide to pass through the waist of the shoe into the toebox where, I'd imagine, most people need stretching. For the sake of comparison, look up a pair of shoe trees and see how much larger the front portion of the stretcher is than that of a shoe tree.

I guess I could try a woman's small/medium or something. But I would not recommend you buy this product unless you can handle it personally at a brick & mortar store. Either that, or Amazon could update the description to include the actual dimensions of the product.
